190 proof liquor
Is a 95% ethanol solution used in labs pretty much the same thing as a 190 proof liquor like everclear?

Today in my biology lab we used a 95% ethanol solution, with the other 5% being, presumably, distilled water. Is this pretty much the same thing as a 190 proof liquor like everclear? Would it have had the same effect on my body as liquor with that alcohol content would?

The ethanol used in labs/manufacturing is denatured, essentially poisoned. There's two reasons for this, one is so the maker doesn't have to pay booze taxes, the other is that it's far cheaper to make high levels of ethanol using processes that leave toxic stuff in the other 5%.

So the ethanol will have the same effect on you as drinking everclear (which you should never do straight) but the other 5% will have drastically unpleasant effects.
