With the alcohol-related accidents staggeringly increasing in most of the states in US, the government hopes that the implementation of the program like ignition interlocks would significantly reduce such accidents in future. Now over 40 states in US have ignition interlock programs. Recently, Arizona launched the ignition interlock program which forces the first time DUI offenders to have the device installed in their vehicle. This program is modeled after New Mexico's interlock program which resulted in the reduction of alcohol-related accidents to 12 percent.
What is an ignition interlock device (IID)?
Ignition interlock device (IID) is an alcohol breath screening device which is installed in a vehicle's dashboard. Once the ignition interlock device is installed in your vehicle, you are required to provide your breath sample by simply breathing out into the device before every time you start your vehicle. If your blood alcohol level is above a preset level, i.e. 0.2 to 0.4 BAC, your vehicle will not start.
And even while you are driving, the interlock device prompts at random times for a breath sample. By this way, it prevents an intoxicated driver to let a friend breath into the device and then drive away. But if you refuse to provide your breath sample or your breath sample exceeds the preset BAC of your ignition interlock device, it warns you, log the event automatically and then starts up an alarm until the ignition is switched off.
Who should install the device?
A person with a prior DUI conviction as well as a first time DUI offenders having a high blood alcohol content or declined to take a chemical test or caused accidents are required to install the device in their vehicle.

The monthly rental fee for the device costs around $70 to $100 and you will also be required to make a scheduled appointment for every 30 to 60 days to have your device calibrated.
