Founder, Paul Jones, Jr., moved his business, which he started in the 1860s, to "Whiskey Row" in Louisville, Kentucky in 1884. Legend has it that he sent a proposal to a Southern belle who replied to him saying she would wear a corsage made of roses to the upcoming ball. As he awaited her answer, she arrived at the ball wearing a corsage made of four red roses. In 1888, Four Roses Bourbon was named such as a symbol for his love of the Southern belle.
The Paul Jones Company bought one of the few distilleries allowed to make medicinal Bourbon during prohibition, the Frankfort Distilling Company, in 1922, and Four Roses became one of the top Bourbon brands. Seagram bought the Frankfort Distilling Company in 1943 and they decided to suspend the sale of Kentucky Straight Bourbon in the United States, where they sold only blended whiskeys, and moved Bourbon sales to the European and Asian markets.
The Kirin Brewery Company bought the Four Roses trademark in 2002 and named it Four Roses Distillery.
Since the early 1800's, Kentucky's famous distilleries have crafted the world's finest bourbons, using secret recipes and a long-established process passed down from generation to generation.
